The project concept revolves around a su- stainable factory that can continuously adapt based on operational conditions au- tomatically recorded by an integrated tra- ceability system and supported by a digital twin. This digital twin facilitates the intro- duction of artificial intelligence (AI) ele- ments and Decision Support Systems (DSS). Here, Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques enable the development of know-how useful for technological process control, particularly when production volumes are significant. Additionally, an in-depth study is planned concerning the safety of AM te- chnology due to the emission of ultrafine and fine particles with potential cytotoxici- ty and an in-depth study of reusable or recycled materials for AAA applications.
Italian SMEs are at the center of a critical challenge: the European Commission, through carbon emission pricing, requires the development of sustainable Supply Chains (SC). Companies are expected to reduce emissions by implementing Circu- lar Economy (CE) initiatives. The literatu- re has provided limited evidence regar- ding the relationship between market proximity, production, and the adoption of CE practices. Therefore, understanding the intersections between micro-level phenomena (green factory design and enabling technologies) and meso-level phenomena (SC structure) represents a significant research gap, especially in the SME scenario, which is characterized by the lack of an internal managerial layer capable of addressing this challenge.
The objective is to provide SMEs with a tailored and sustainable production environment, connected to its digital twin which guides a continuous improvement. This extended production environment must also be integrated into a local, sustainable, and circular supply chain.
